Headshot of article author Denyse Niwenshuti

What’s Changing?

Microsoft has announced that Office Online Server (OOS) will be retired effective December 31, 2026. As a result, PBIRS users will no longer be able to host Excel workbooks in PBIRS using OOS after November 2026, in accordance with the PBIRS Support Timelines Policy. Additionally, beginning with the January 2026 PBIRS release, configuration of PBIRS to use OOS for hosting Excel workbooks will no longer be supported.

What Does This Mean for You?

  • January 2026: PBIRS will remove the option to host Excel workbooks using OOS.
  • November 2026: Support for hosting Excel workbooks via OOS in PBIRS ends.
  • December 31, 2026: Official end of support for OOS.

Next Steps

  • Switch to Microsoft 365 Excel: Use Excel for viewing workbooks.
  • Move to Power BI Service: For a cloud-first experience, migrate your reports and workbooks to the Power BI service.

If you currently use OOS to host Excel workbooks in PBIRS, your reports will keep working until November 2026. To prevent any disruptions, it’s important for customers to plan ahead and move to the recommended alternatives before that deadline.
