Empowering our customers to shape the future of data connectivity in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric

Headshot of article author Miguel Escobar

We’re excited to announce a major evolution in how Microsoft approaches data connectivity—one that puts you, our customers, at the center of the conversation.

As our platform and customer needs have matured, we’re shifting to a model that’s agile, scalable, and community-driven—and it starts with your voice.

You drive the connector roadmap

We’re introducing a new process for requesting connectors through the Fabric ideas. This means:

  • You can submit ideas for new data sources and destinations.
  • You can vote on what matters most to you.
  • Your input will directly shape which connectors Microsoft builds next.

This community-led approach ensures that our connector strategy reflects real-world needs and delivers the most impactful experiences across Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.

What else you should know

  • Microsoft will lead new connector development. By building connectors in-house, we can better align with customer demand and ensure a consistent, high-quality experience.
  • Custom connectors remain fully supported. Organizations can continue to build and use their own connectors in Power BI Desktop and refresh them in the Power BI Service using the on-premises data gateway—fully self-serve.
  • Existing certified connectors will continue to be supported. Partners may still submit critical security updates, and we’ve provided guidance to help them manage future versions.

We’re grateful to our partners for their contributions over the years. Their work with certified connectors laid the foundation for a thriving connector ecosystem. Now, we’re excited to take the next step—with our customers leading the way.

We also encourage partners to reach out to us via our support channel should you have any questions.
